In retrospect, Marc Andressen was right in asking Systrom to have a co-founder, because Krieger was his support system when things got tough at Facebook.Whatsapp and Oculus Rift founders have to leave soon after the sale to Facebook. Those founders who sell might find money but don’t find autonomy and sooner or later have to leave.Verified accounts, banning specific keywords in comments, feed algorithms that favored friends and family, and other features emerged to solve specific problems on the app. New challenges emerge as startups grow.Most people, including Systrom, were afraid to disagree with him. Mark Zuckerburg is an egoistic, self-indulgent authoritarian who rarely sought other people’s opinions.Systrom and Kreiger held onto their independence and did things their way, putting user experience and community before profits, and were rewarded with a good reputation on Instagram, while Facebook became Pariah.I have divided the notes into themes (which include my own opinion or interpretation of the events), and a chronology of events as they happened.
